read more closeSanta Teresa's waves flow consistently year-round. Playa Hermosa's low tide is the best time for beginners to give surfing a go, offering super flat land and predictable beach breaks you'll be able to read in no time.
Hire a local bilingual surf instructor who's been catching waves in the area for as long as he or she can remember. Arrive with your instructor to the shades of wild almond trees at Playa Hermosa's beachfront, put on a rash guard and grab your long board.
Step out into the sunshine as your instructor scopes a spot to start the lesson on paddling, standing up, taking off with balance and basic surf etiquette that'll become important once you finally wade into Playa Hermosa's populated waters.
With the instructor at your board's tail, watch together for white waves coming in straight lines behind you, quickly paddling three or four times before pushing up into plank position and setting your feet on the board perpendicular to the shoreline. Focus on your own ride, keeping your eyes straight ahead without turning to look at any other surfers spinning and zigzagging in their own waves.
Give it your all until two hours are up, or you feel tired enough to stop and watch the other Santa Teresa surfers from the shore... whichever comes first. Shake off the sand and salt water, get back in the instructor's car and journey to your hotel.
